Fare Collection Resumes on August 1

Starting on Saturday, August 1, Kitsap Transit will resume collecting fares on all of its services. 

Kitsap Transit temporarily stopped collecting fares on March 23 to minimize interaction at the farebox and slow the spread of COVID-19.

Since then Kitsap Transit has taken steps to protect the health of its passengers and employees, including mandatory face coverings, daily disinfection of the fleet and restricting passenger loads. Transparent physical barriers between the operator’s area and the entry door will be installed on buses in July, enabling fare collection to resume.

If you need to load your ORCA card, the Bremerton Transportation Center (BTC) is open Monday through Friday from 6 AM-10 AM and 3 PM-7 PM. BTC is closed on weekends. Patrons are allowed in the building only during these hours and will need to vacate the building at all other times.

Current capacity on Routed buses is still 25 to 30 percent, depending on the vehicle. On certain routes, Kitsap Transit operates additional buses to address potential overcrowding. Passenger loads on Worker/Driver buses are capped at 22 passengers.

Current capacity on ferries is still 46 passengers on each sailing; the fast-ferry reservation system remains suspended. Kitsap Fast Ferries discontinued priority boarding on westbound trips from Seattle to Kitsap. Priority boarding for health-care workers and first responders are allowed on eastbound trips to Seattle. For health care workers, only official medical-facility ID badges will be accepted (no contractors or subcontractors).

Face Covering Required

Starting on Friday, June 26, Kitsap Transit began requiring all customers to wear a face covering or mask on its buses, ferries, and vans as well as at transit centers, park & ride lots, ferry terminals and all other Kitsap Transit properties.

Kitsap Transit is following a statewide mandatory face covering order issued on June 23 by Gov. Jay Inslee and the state Secretary of Health. The order requires people to wear a face covering in indoor public spaces and outdoors where six feet of distance from others isn't possible.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy

During this unprecendented public-health emergency, Kitsap Transit strongly encourages all customers to please observe this guidance if you plan to board our buses or ferries:

  1. Wear a face covering: Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth face covering even if you do not feel sick. If you don't have a cloth to cover your face, remember to always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides guidance on cloth face coverings: CLICK HERE.
  2. Keep your distance: Stay at least 6 feet from the operator and other riders. Look for a yellow line painted on the floor of your bus and stay behind it.
  3. Wash your hands often: Clean your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
  4. Only use designated seats: Board through the rear door if your bus has one and avoid any seats that have been marked off.

Disinfection of our Fleet and Facilities

Kitsap Transit has a comprehensive disinfection program to kill germs, including coronaviruses, on our buses and ferries and at our transit centers. 

Each day we wipe down the main touchpoints on our buses with a hospital-grade disinfectant. We "deep clean" our buses at least twice a week by mopping the floors and disinfecting drop straps, overhead rails and seat backs. We deep clean our ACCESS buses that serve the frail and elderly more frequently. On our ferries we disinfect touchpoints at the end of each shift.

At our transit centers we are regularly disinfecting benches, displays and other frequent touchpoints.

Our lobby at the Harborside Administration office is closed to the public until further notice. We are still accepting deliveries of packages.
